Yoga

Question from Mandy Johnstone, Livingston:

Is Yoga suitable for pregnant women?

I am five months pregnant and want to get into shape before my baby arrives. Is Yoga a good form of exercise for pregnant women?

Answer from Pamela Taylor, Cornwall:

Yoga can be adapted and modified to suit the requirements of pregnant women. A lot of pregnant women do not want to pile on unnecessary pounds when they get pregnant and turn to yoga to help them maintain a healthy body weight while still providing nutrition for the unborn baby. Practicing yoga will not only keep you fit during your pregnancy but it can help you to have a comfortable pregnancy and delivery. When done properly yoga can help you to avoid some of the more unpleasant sides of pregnancy such as back pain, weight gain, stretch marks and sagging stomach. Some of the yoga postures are more suitable for pregnant women and some will help you to get your body ready for an easier delivery. You can also learn many breathing techniques which will help you during labour. Whatever stage of pregnancy you are in, it is advisable to consult with your doctor or midwife before beginning any new exercise program and you should be extremely careful while exercising.
