Yoga

Question from Lynda Burke, Antrim:

How much Yoga should I do?

Can you tell me how many times per week I should be doing Yoga and for how long each time?

Answer from Ethan Foster, Cardiff:

Regular yoga practice is very beneficial. A lot of yoga schools will recommend between 60 and 90 minutes each day but for most people that may be too much. Many people simply cannot fit that much into their day. However, it would be better to practice a lesser amount of time each day then to practice for hours once a week. Many experts recommend that you decide on an amount of time that you could stick to each day and to build a routine into that time frame. Once you build this routine into your day it will become habitual and will provide much better benefit to you than doing yoga just once or twice each week. The key to yoga is constant practice and this can be 10 minutes each day or more. Plus one of the most important points of yoga is to make sure your mind is fully committed to what you are doing. So if it is just ten minutes each day of practicing yoga mindfully, it is better than 60 minutes of practicing yoga with your mind on something else.
