Yoga

Question from Bernadette Cooke, Liverpool:

Do I have to fast before doing Yoga?

Someone told me that you are not supposed to eat for about four hours before doing Yoga – is this correct?

Answer from Mary James, Winchester:

It is recommended by some that you abstain from eating for about two to three hours before practicing yoga to reduce the chance of experiencing heartburn or nausea. However it is probably more important to be careful about what you eat rather than when you eat and how much you are eating. It is better to avoid saucy foods for at least three hours before practicing yoga. If you are hungry before your class then it would be a good idea to eat something small to satisfy your hunger but nothing that will risk you being uncomfortable during your class. Try to avoid spicy or oily foods too. Some foods which should be avoided before your class are soups, tea, coffee, curries, fried foods, pizzas and salads with heavy dressings. Good choices would be bananas, dry nuts, cereal, dried fruits, or cereal bars.
