Yoga

Question from Suzanne Jordan, Aberdeen:

Does Yoga have anything to do with Religion?

I have heard that Yoga is a religion – is this true and will it affect my religious beliefs?

Answer from Morgan Singleton, London:

Yoga can be practiced by anyone regardless of their religious beliefs. It is more of a spiritual faith than a religion and nobody is expected to become a member of any religion just by practicing yoga. There is a physical side and a spiritual side to yoga. The physical side concentrates on the exercises and the stretching and lengthening of your muscles while the spiritual side focuses on relaxation and breathing. The benefits of yoga do not depend on chanting.
