Yoga for Beginners

When you're just beginning yoga, making the choice to get started is an excellent first step! However, with so much information out there, as well as many different ways to learn yoga, it's easy to become overwhelmed and not know what to do next. If you're a little confused as to how to go about starting, just follow this guide:

1. Choose Your Type of Yoga

There are many different types of yoga out there, so the first step is to decide which type you wish to practice. The truth is that some types of yoga will suit you more than others, but it takes a little research to find out what those may be.

Of course, the type of yoga you choose will also be limited to classes available in your local area, unless you choose to learn on your own through books, the internet and DVDs. Some basic styles that suit beginners are hatha and vinyasa. 2. Going to Your First Class

You may have already seen some classes advertised, but if not now's the time to find a class available in your local area. Yoga classes are often advertised in local leisure centres, and they don't always have details available online. The best way is simply to phone local facilities, ask friends, and check local newspaper ads. If you're already a member of a gym then this might also be a great place to begin.

The good news is that classes are often offered at different times of the day. If you're working, you should be able to find one in the evenings when most people have finished work. Most classes will be weekly, though you might also pay for a course that lasts a fixed amount of time. It's always best to enquire at individual facilities to find out more.

When you arrive for your first yoga class you needn't worry about what to bring. Just make sure your clothing is comfortable and not too tight, and the instructor will advise you on what you should expect in future.

3. Getting the Most from Your Yoga Class

If you're new to yoga then it's a good idea to learn what to expect to get the most you can from your yoga class. Make sure you place your mat in a way that you have enough space to perform the movements required, and that you warm up gently before you start your poses. This is very important – especially when you're new – and you might feel a bit achy the next day!

The great thing about yoga classes is that they can help you to relax. Yoga classes often incorporate meditation and breathing exercises before they begin to get you in the right frame of mind. At first, you might find the breathing unnatural. However, over time you'll begin to learn how to relax into the breathing and the poses to make them come naturally to you.

To make you feel more relaxed you can read up on elements of the class such as basic poses and yoga etiquette. Also, don't be afraid to tell the teacher that you're new and don't know much about yoga – they'll be happy to help you out.

4. Learning Yoga At Home

You may also choose to learn yoga at home, whether that's because there are no classes near you, or because you want to learn a different style. For real beginners, a class is always the best way to start. However, using a DVD is a good way to get an idea of the way your body needs to move and stretch.
